Being a nutrition coach in the fitness industry for quite a while now, there are multiple queries that come up asking about the myths or the basic fundamentals of nutrition and training. Out of all such questions, we do often get to hear — How does a coach help you in the process of transformation or fitness journey. With the rapid growth of AI and the capability of humans to use the technology, there are multiple apps coming up that help you lose some mere kgs on scale along with a number of challenging training plans and day to day tasks which one can follow joyfully. But then, why a coach?

The moment I stepped in as a coach, these were some of the thoughts on the top of my mind: why would somebody ever seek for my guidance; is it that people could get inspired seeing my cool pictures in social media handles, flexing and posing or is it those video clips capturing some heavy lifts? On a higher level, yes, there could be few who would care to join me and expect me to help them get to their desired fitness levels after seeing my posts because — “Hmm! This guy seems to be so motivating, let’s check with him if he could guide me regularly; Oh ! Dude’s got abs, I definitely need to follow his diet and training plans. Let me hit him up”. Sounds funny, but Yes,that’s one side of the story and has been true for me.

The job of a coach or a mentor could be similar to what teachers would do to their students. You might have all the digital world and technology at your feet, yet you would still need somebody to educate you on how to use it. Same goes for fitness, if my app guides me to lose 4 kgs then how well can I do it ? A coach then becomes the human interface to achieving goals.

More so, I believe it’s the accountability factor that plays a major role in an individual’s fitness journey. Remember when you lost few pennies while walking on the road, you stood still with clammy hands and sweaty brows knowing you would be thrashed for it. Every second you kept thinking how bad the scolding could be. On the contrary, what if you simply showed the guts to speak up and face it, of course you would be scolded, yet there is bright chance that you would be appreciated for owning up to the mistake and maybe not repeating it.

End result — This event would eventually have some a humbling effect on you as a person, you could learn to hold responsibilities in a better way, value the things at hand and also not be afraid to accept and admit.

I call it the Accountability factor — yes you read it right. It’s the same accountability thing that we all seek in different forms. A subordinate might expect the same kind of support from his/ her ordinates, while it would be same for an athlete being scolded by his/ her coach.

While some may seek for it as a strict and stringent advice from a person whom they could purposefully abide by and would blindly follow to make sure they get to their desired results; few may seek it as a source of motivation from their coach, which could prevent them from falling down during their journey, whether it’s about an average individual going through a transformation or be it any sports person looking to compete and win. It becomes easier when you have a person to whom you could confide to and confront your fears with.

There is nothing wrong in choosing a guide who could show you the right path and also assess if you go wrong in any way, the guide could be anyone in your life.
