The Inertia of Jumping the Hump!

Assuming you started your Day 01 of your training and nutrition on a typical Monday (because that’s universally accepted), you wake up with a lot of push after a well spent weekend, finally geared up to make it one of the best weeks of your life with respect to your fitness routine. Next 2 days could be the most productive ones until Thursday comes up and those weekend vibes and stress from all areas of life start showing their colors. What happens next is just a replica of the same set of habits that you have been into all these years, after all it’s a weekend and you are a free bird now. Wish if our bodies would have been smart enough to differentiate between a weekday and a weekend!

Why is it so difficult to stick to a routine when you had already made up your mind to achieve a goal?

Why is it so difficult to stick to your decisions and choices when you were the one who had a desire to achieve it?

  • No, not your friend, not your family, spouse, or anybody else should be telling you the importance of sticking to your plan, irrespective of what happens around. The thing many fail to understand is our desires behind choosing to do an activity or the intentions behind having a certain goal.

  • So, once you are done with that initial part you are already sorted, no tom dick and harry could come up and tell you that you shouldn’t do what you have been intending to do.

Still we give up. Why can’t we be consistent enough?

  • Talking about fitness, it’s a special gift that we all need to understand and respect. You need to keep sowing the seeds year after year to enjoy those fruits at the end. If you have reached a point by doing a certain bit of things and you already know that you are not fit enough, then you simply need to understand that going back to the same zone is definitely not gonna help. The only thing that’ll happen is you go back to square one and seek for some more sources of motivation to start over again, maybe that can work for an A and B, but not really for a C or other.

  • So, you see there’s a pattern that we follow until finally we take the charge of our own wagon, sometimes soon, while at times it could be a little late with a warning (you can relate the health hazards here).

So, what really goes wrong?

  • It would be wrong if you completely blame yourself here. Many times we would have fallen for those fad diets for quick results or the peer pressure from the people around or the society. We fail miserably, maybe multiple times, that we finally come to a point to understand what is really wrong on our part. Now, you can blame yourself since you didn’t dare to question the process on earlier occasions, nor did you try to educate yourself.

  • But, then we are humans right, we seek for quick food, quick exercise, quick results. You see that’s the problem, without going into the process we have always been thinking about the changes or results to happen.

So, I have a question here- How can you have a happy ending unless you have a happy journey? Trust me stress has a role to play here.

But, why this whole philosophy here?

  • Well, if you connect all the above dots you will find what exactly you have been doing wrong. Seeking for an extrinsic motivation to setting unexpected goals, to maybe falling for something that defies the science and practicality without showing any interest in being aware.

So, how to start over?

  • Set up realistic goals, and try being aware of the basics at least.

  • Learn to give time to yourself and to your body, you cannot build an empire in a day.

  • Acknowledge the fact that you have hurdles, not everyone has the same lifestyle, and hence never fall for relative comparison.

  • Work upon building right habits and being mindful enough of the choices.

  • Learn to say NO (it really helps).

  • Once you achieve a milestone or a goal, learn to sustain that first before you try fetching another.

  • Work upon the small metrics, so that the efforts happen implicitly. Any inspired action stays longer than the one you just got motivated to do.

Now, talking about myself, its a passion and lifestyle, both.
